probably the last time i'm writing a post here...

wow, time flies. it's been 3 years since i've first step foot here. happy-sad that i'm graduating. at this point, more sad than happy... certain things have become clear to me over these few years... one of it is the meaning of Love. the perfect example is God and His Son, Jesus - who in an ultimate act of love, laid down His life. for humanity... for people like me. how crazy is that.

after living for 22 years, is there something/someone whom i can say with certainty that i love? will i choose to lay down my life for them? yeah, i like many things... i like music. i like food. i like yous. but, dare i say i 'love'? in my selfish nature, i have not come to a point where i have learnt to love. in all states, in all circumstances...

perhaps this is Life*. learning to live out our faith and hope with the love that was freely given to us.

Creator God,

show me how to love like You have loved me.

the month of april/may was activity-filled. some photos...

it was pretty good overall. just that we had to wait 1.5hours between the opening act

and her appearance. they practically played all the MJ hits during that wait... haha.

SWITCHFOOT!

i've always liked switchfoot. but after that day, i really really like them. so much crowd

interaction. Jon Foreman was standing on the barricade. held someone's hand for support.

he kept climbing out to walk around the bar... guess you could only do that at a

small venue.

inspirational. not just for me, but also for my friends. i think something's gonna come out

of the switchfoot gig we went for. we'll see :)

went for John Mayer a few weeks ago. didnt quite enjoy it as much as Switchfoot. maybe

i'm biased - switchfoot had already set that high standard. the venue, the fact that i had

an important exam the next day and that i was sick was probably the reason why i didnt

enjoy it that much. but still, he is good. very skilled guitarist. and he gave space for his

band mates to solo as well.

orianthi opened for him. interesting to see a lady shredding...

finally went to develop the photos on the disposable camera. CNY@JT's

Goodbye, Easter

my friend came over from sg for a short holiday this easter. it was good having

her around. funny that it's only when a friend comes over that i'm traveling

around melbourne. if she hadnt come, i dont know if i would be going to the

tourist attractions at all.

we went to philip island for easter camp. my first with Life* Expedition. one that

i've wanted to join since last year. 4 day getaway far out at Philips Island where

we also took a tour to see penguins and koalas.

camp was good, sometimes felt a little strange. i had my friend from sg, my

house church group, many other church members that i knew by face but never

interacted with, and finally the arrow students. camps here are same same but

different to the ones i've attended in church back home. for one, so much 'better'

food! breakfast, tea, lunch, tea, dinner, supper. the same number of meals a day

but the food is freshly cooked and served. unlike ta bao food... haha. not to say i

prefer the ang moh style dishes or chinese food.

desserts aka sweets -- passionfruit cream puff thing.

(too sweet for my liking)

honestly, i didnt learn much from the sermons at camp. couldnt get the point the

speaker was trying to make. sometimes i think its my attitude. or maybe i'm too

used to deeper analysis? anyway, my biggest takeaway is being able to share what

i've learnt at LE in my past 2 years with my friend from sg. having her around to

witness what inspires and excites me. having her meet friends who journeyed with

me these past 2 years.

i'm lost in my train of thoughts again. haha.

Melbourne 2010

been back in melbourne for nearly a month. it gets harder to leave singapore

everytime...

2010. my last year of undergrad studies. i feel that my time here is too short.

the people i've met, the things i've learnt... i will update more often :)

oh, i shared in church for the first time in my life. scary...

the next few weeks are gonna be exciting. will be going for some events n

concerts. just today, i went for the loreal fashion show. the clothes were

nice, but they didnt wow me. still, it was fun.

probably wont go again, but it was a good one-time experience.

Counting down...

thought i'd do a short update before i come back to sg (15days...)

the most memorable thing in the past few months was Australia University Games (AUG) 2009. this year's games was held in Gold Coast. was not intending to go. thought last year's experience was enough. but my friend who hasnt been to one wanted to (and squash is always the easiest sport to get into). so i was in... its a little crazy to think that my team got silver. i mean, my team was really weak. girls who picked up squash for 6 months only!

silver sounds good... i havent told u that there were only 4 girl teams! haha. much like mg days... and much like mg days, i got a silver. randomly, i miss my mg team. or rather, i miss sec school/ jc days. remember the times when we hung out at the squash court? and played hai-dai?

6 days. i enjoyed myself more than last year's AUG with the frisbee team. guess its because i'm better at squash. large part probably was that the squash team's very diff from the frisbee team. funny thing that i found that i was happy in Gold Coast even though i didnt get to do any of the things i planned to do (my main reason was not to play squash - squash was just to accompany my friend - i wanted to go to Movie World and Dreamworld). mainly, we didnt do anything except play squash, eat pasta and drink beer. why was i happy? i think its because it was a good time away from nasty melbourne weather. it was a time when i could not think about assignments, tests, all the uni stuff. it was a fun time.

would i go for AUG 2010 perth? for now, i dont think so, just too expensive. unless my friend makes it back to melbourne uni's honours prog and wants to go... haha.

other than that, finally got to SKYDIVE. was supposed to do it for my birthday but the weather was bad. 4 months waiting... it was good. tho actually, i think that roller coaster is scarier. thank God for the good weather. thank Dad and Mum for sponsoring me (tho i only told them after i signed up)

Celebrations

i find that i'm beginning to like parties more since coming to melbourne. the gathering of friends, the fun and laughter... an opportunity to witness God's goodness at work. how nice.

attended quite a few birthday celebrations this year (yes, mostly 21sts). even i, had a party. just a small one with church friends. first ever real party! i enjoyed myself.

woah. woah. time flies...

the past few months have been quite exciting. went for Jason Mraz's concert, a few 21sts and worked for a while. Kenneth visited as well. that was nice. again, i just love gatherings... grace said she'll be coming in july. hope the swine flu situation gets better so her parents will be ok with her coming. i'll post photos next time

meanwhile, i've got 3 exams and one take-home essay thing.

daph: i never knew that. do all names have some sort of literal meaning?

went for Overseas Christian Fellowship's (OCF) easter camp. 'overseas'... but mainly singaporeans and malaysians. food was siew yuk, chicken rice, green bean soup... those kind of things. we went to Portsea. a beach bout 2h away from the city. it was a good time of refreshment for me. but coming back to the city, the stress of uni is back too. assignments assignments :X

in facing these 'mountains', thought it was very timely that i had to do a SOAP on a psalm last night.

learnt this devotion technique - SOAP last year. Scripture, Observation, Application, Prayer. this one, i did with my cell group last night. never used to go for cell group back in singapore. being here = much more free time to do more things.

Thank You, Lord, once again for the opportunity to be here.

nama apa?

nothing much been happening lately. i'm just into my routine life. not quite settled into year2 yet (and it's already the 6th week of school!) already looking forward to winter break cos i'll be going to sydney =)

something funny...

we did a 'what does your name mean and where did you get it from' chat at church a few weeks ago... back in singapore, i never really thought much about what my name meant. now that i think of it, it's a lovely name. heehee. i mean the meaning of it. 诗歌(poem)才华(talent). never asked my parents what it meant and why they gave it to me, but i translate it as talented. woooah. can i even live up to that? still in the midst of discovering my talents :D

did you know...

that the hanyu pinyin for my name is actually Shi Hua? my dad said the guy who registered my name spelt it wrongly in my BC. i think i've grown used to Si Hua. spelling it with the extra 'h' looks weird.

ok, back to the funny part - the interesting stories behind each name. my friend Brian, said his mum gave him the name cos she wanted him to be smart. and Brian looks like Brain. hahaha. everyone laughed. cos Brian is really smart. in med and always 'in his own world'. too intellectual... haha. when i look at him now, i think of a brain. (actually, i like the spelling Bryan better)

another friend Leon said his elder brother's name is Noel. so his name is the spelling of noel backwards. he's not sure if that was intentional tho. haha

then, someone said he doesnt know the meaning of his name, Binu and where it came from, but its a common name in india. one of the church guys quickly did a search online and found this out - Binu is an acronym for Baby I Need U. MUAHAHA

so, what does your name mean? where did your parents get your name from?

My February...

it's almost the end of feb. you all are probably having your midsemester break right now. better start doing the assignments... ;) as for me, summer school ended last week and proper semester starts next week. taking a short break now. a really short one. feel tired cos i havent gotten a proper rest. my summer holiday in sg was just for a month and it wasnt much of a holiday. sometimes i think i do really crazy out-of-the-norm stuff.

anyway, my mum's friend came over last week and i got the chance to go to the Yarra Valley where the wineries are. an enriching experience for a noob like me :P

some pretty crazy things happened in melbourne in the last few weeks... one of them was the bushfires. never really followed the news coverage on it so it wasnt until witnessing the burnt areas itself that the state of devastation really struck me.

they sealed off the badly affected ares... some photos which i took.

cant imagine the damage to the areas that were even more affected. the air still had the chao-ta smell

scary right. bushfires, 46 degree temperatures... read somewhere that about 100 melburnians died from the heatwave. my first thought was 'it was bad but not life-threatening right'. these days... drought here, flooding there, destruction everywhere. maybe these are signs of God's judgement. maybe the end of the world is coming. maybe we should all escape to heaven.

something to think about:

1) what is this 'end of the world' that ppl talk about?

2) what is judgement? (punishment?)

3) what is my idea of heaven?

The King & I - Freedom

just came back from The King & I womens conference (sounds so girl power..) held by Life* Expedition - www.lifeexpedition.org/freedom08 never really heard of such things in singapore before. been to a few youth conferences but not one that is for women so i decided to go and see what its about.

basically, The King & I conference is about women living free from Condemnation, Comparisons, Categorization and Cynicism. This year's theme is Freedom (all the knowledge and opportunities to be all that we were created to be), to live as daughters of the King of Kings.

the 4Cs and freedom were also stuff i learnt at Life* 101 over the month of august and september. its just amazing when i see how everything that the senior pastor, tim goh, preaches is related. how the whole beliefs of the church is directly related to tim's messages (i initially felt weird calling the pastor by his name cos i had to use 'pastor' back in singapore... maybe its a respect thing. i dunno.) the way everything falls into place nicely is just cool. like tim talks about Love, Faith and Hope. and i realized that Life* with a '*' because it stands for Love Inspired, Hope Filled, Faith Empowered (LIHFFE actually, but still the same pronunciation so they shortened it to Life*). how ingenious.

so anyway, the main topics during the conference were identity, intimacy, destiny and community. before every session, women in the church would share their testimonies (my fav part). they shared their lives so openly. someone talked about her close relationship with her father, and how her heavenly Father fulfilled the role of her earthly father when he passed away. i was like 'wow she's so close to her dad, me and my dad dont talk much. i cant imagine what i'd do if i was her'. but the story didnt end there... she was reminded of an incident when she was 8 when her father touched her in a weird way (nothing more happened cos her mum appeared). she never gave much thought to it until after he passed away and she started thinking about what that might have meant. she now gives thanks to God that she has found her identity in Him. her heavenly Father has been taking care of her in more ways than her earthly father could ever have. what a testimony. someone else shared about how she called off her wedding which was supposed to be held a few days after because she saw the true colours of her fiancee. and another shared about her breakup with her boyfriend that led her to alcoholism, anorexia and internet dating (nothing against it but she was like dating a different guy almost everyday) she had to reconcile that what had happened was not her fault before she could find intimacy with God again. their stories really amaze me cos they look like such strong women. i think it's also cos my story is nothing like theirs.

reminds me of the time when i did a short bible course. the testimonies of my friends are so interesting. its nice to see people from difference backgrounds worshipping the same God. (actually, the thing i remembered most out of the bible course was actually the testimonies. haha. looking back, i should have paid more attention to the lecturers)

so i've learnt quite a few things from this conference. too much to type, plus i think its harder for you all to understand me by reading cos i cant express myself very well (GP c6... haha) but you can ask me bout it whenever, i'll gladly share with you

oh ya, it dawned on me today that maybe the theme for love mg 2008, My God Shelters meant the same. my sister sent me the sticker for my birthday and my first thought was 'why shelter? seems as tho God makes us live in our bubbles, oblivious of what is happening in the world around us...' (previous years were 'better' - My God Saves and My God Shines)

the umbrella in the rain. God doesnt stop the rain, he doesnt want us to just run around in the rain either. He provides us with an umbrella. God doesnt prevent troubles from happening in our lives. He doesnt want us to be overtaken by the troubles either. He helps us through them.

my 'mid-sem' break...

woah, a month has passed since i last updated. its quite scary that time passes so fast. not that i'm having fun (or not). the weeks just seem to pass by so fast. for now, i like it this way. i'm particularly stressed over the exams this sem, cos i've been very unfocused. i'm looking forward to the end of it

so, an update of my 'mid-semester' break...

mainly, All Day I Dream About Slacking... supposed to be Studying, but i just lazed around : / one thing i realized is that coming to melbourne has sort of brought out the worst in me in terms of discipline. i always thought that i had self-control... like what my mum said, the true test of self-discipline is what a person does when studying overseas. yea, so that's another thing i learnt about myself :)

other than lazing around, the highlights of the break, or the more interesting things that i did...

met up with kenneth. again, it's always nice to have people visiting ^_^ its strange how i never talked as much to some of u or never thought i had much to say(like sher, ches, kenneth, amos) until we graduated from ac. and those that i talked with more during ac days, i dont really know of their happenings now. another learning point for me - not to be so judgmental. and also, i gotta spend more time getting to know a person. i might just find that we have more in common (or are more different) than i thought. nothing is coincidental... i thank God for giving me a chance to get to know all of you. its cool to think about how God made our paths cross so that we shared 2 years of our lives together. to many more years of friendship :)

played ultimate frisbee at my first and probably last Australian University Games. the only reason why i'm in the team is cos they lacked girls. we played 12 games in 5 days! most intensive competition i've joined. tiring and by the last day, everyone was feeling sore. (frisbee photos were taken by amir - nikon dslr! - who every kindly came even though he was not playing)

i look like O. terrible i know... but i just had to post it. haha. i myself cant believe thats me. i can be the pufferfish during our next animal game :D

another major thing that stood out during the week - family ties. there're 3 siblings in my team - the Phillips. apparently, there are 7 of them altogether (they can form a team by themselves!) its nice to see how close they are. makes me miss my brother and sister. hopefully, i'll remember to treat them better when i get back. heehee :P

Singapore Day 2008. i volunteered with some friends. i got this job where i had to check for attendees' names and communicate to people in charged of the queue via a walkie-talkie. that was fun :)

winter break...

july 2008 was a memorable one for me. did some stuff i've never done before like going for a road trip and a snow trip. really enjoyed myself, but it was also the period where i experienced one of the lowest times since i've been here (and maybe even in my life).

Gifts

Yifang came to visit recently. Doesnt feel like it was too long ago since the last time I saw her (feb). kinda came a little early cos the melb uni ppl are in the midst of exam ppreparations... so she had to spend most of the time wandering around alone.

anyway, yifang passed me the mug and letter/card from olie which i was supposed to have gotten if i stayed a little longer at the departure hall. happy to receive this gift! i think it had a greater effect that it was overdue... i was just thinking about how nice it would be if i had a thermal flask, to be able to drink hot drinks in winter :) thanks olie! now i have one. plus, there are photos on it. God in His perfect timing...

reminds me of the many presents i received from people before i left. some of these things i'd never have imagined myself to own. like they're either too expensive or not my kind of thing. but strangely, they've become my most-used items here. actually, most of my clothes in melb were given to me. haha

makes me wonder, what have i done to deserve all these gifts? what have i done to deserve all the love? well, if the love of friends(man) can be so great, what more that of God. i have done nothing to deserve God's love. in fact, i've done so many things that would be the perfect reason for God to not love me.

It's nice to receive gifts. even though i felt that i didnt deserve all those gifts, i still accepted them ;) it's sort of a way for the giver to express how much he/she values the receiver. accepting the gift not only made me feel good but i think it made the givers happy too. in the same way, God has given us His gift of love even though we are undeserving of it. it shows how much He values us. His love brings joy to us and to Him as well.

I've accepted His gift. hope that you will too.

just checked my timetable(they only release it like 1 month before the exams!)... my last paper is at the end of june... thats bad :(

anyway, been busy the past few weeks. friends and family visiting from singapore. first was my cousin and her family. her husband graduated from Melbourne Uni commerce too. they kinda met here (she was the air stewardess on his flight here) so they came here mainly to see how things have changed... quite cool right. maybe i should check out the steward when i go back! ^_-

mum's friend came over. kinda weird cos i never really talked to him much back in singapore. then my church friend (SIA also! stopped over for the night). it's funny to think that i never would have gotten down to catching up with them if i was in singapore. really happy that they bothered to call me up when they came.

well, the smu ppl have finished their exams. nus girls almost done. its the long summer break! simin will be coming over for a mission trip. overseas mission... sounds exciting.

a cake shop that we visited. the cakes were huge! and expensive. didnt think they were was as good as i heard it was though.

words in the sky. i couldnt make out what it saidcamberwell market. usually go to the queen victoria market but my friend wanted to explore. took us an hour to get there! one of my fav things to do here is to go marketing. haha. like to look at the fruits. fruits that are expensive in singapore are cheap here. great! joyce will probably enjoy marketing too :P

i think the aussies are quite into the ethics of eating... i see a lot more free range chicken and non-caged eggs. never knew that there were such things in singapore. my friend said they're tastier. havent tried so i'm not too sure on that...

ok, shall end off with lame stuff that amos will surely relate to...

Life in Melbourne

Yay! I'm finally able to upload photos. The internet here is pretty lousy. They charge by the amt you dld and not the speed, which means I can't go to webpages that have lots of graphics(like sher's :P)

Anyway, I'm enjoying myself here at Melbourne so far. The lifestyle's quite diff from Singapore. Came back from a camp a few days ago... There was "night activities" for the final night. I thought it'd be like a grand finale, like those at singapore camps but no! It was just a sit-down-and-chill thing. haha. not used to not have activities packed back to back.

So, here are some photos i took during my first week in melb and first few days at school...

That's the Flinders train station. nice old feeling huh.

i walk pass this on my way to school. the nice blue sky is very deceiving. it makes everything look pleasant(not that it isnt)
cycling track. many ppl cycle to school. it's quite common to see girls in dresses cycle too. no need for night cycling!
bicyles everywhere... looks like some scene from the movies

this is quite cool. ppl just sitting around school enjoying the sun. you dont see that often at nus right.

lastly, just wanna say sorry to Olie and Daph.

i finally got down to using my new gmail account(made by sher :)) to login!

here's an image my friend sent me. its from a video called "Indescribable" by Lou Giglio. talks about how even the outer space shows God's existence. it's really amazing. the whole video is bout an hour long. cant find the full version online but youtube has a short one.
